thanks! jonathan, the rig is amazing, having total control to exaggerate shoulder and head movements is really great. clearly (and intuitively) labelled uv maps are a luxury I hope I'm able to afford in the future in situations like this, it certainly meant I was able to figure out texturing a lot faster that I otherwise would have. keep your eyes peeled for the final animation.
